Since acid reflux is something that all of us deal with sometime or another, it is not surprising that many people want to find heartburn remedies. This is common in people that only rarely get heartburn and as a result do not have medicine, for people who may not be able to take medicine like pregnant women, and for people who just do not like to get on medication for any non-life threatening reason (I fall into this last group).
One of the most effective heartburn remedies I have found is chewing gum. Gum stimulates the production of saliva and chewing promotes food to move along in the digestive tract. Both of these things are very effective at reducing acid reflux. The reason for this is that saliva helps improve digestion (which reduces reflux) as well as coats the throat in a protective barrier against stomach acid (which reduces pain).
However, one trick to using chewing gum is you do not want to use a mint gum. Mint flavored things often make heartburn worse, as peppermint is thought to stimulate the production of stomach acid and make reflux more likely to occur. As a result you have to be careful about what types of gum you pick up as an acid reflux remedy.
One of the most interesting heartburn remedies is papaya enzyme gum. This combines the gum remedy with papain, a powerful digestive enzyme which gives many people heartburn relief in its own right. If you use papain gum and get to chew in addition to getting the benefit of digestive enzymes, you will be in a good place to reduce your heartburn symptoms.
